EDITORIAL/ Featured on Fucking Young! - Unreasonable Man

O H M Y G O D. FUCKING YOUNG! featured my editorial today and Saul, Kelsey, and I are more than excited about it! We submitted the editorial last week and after hearing an initial "Yes" from them we didn't get a final confirmation until it was posted today.

For those of you who don't know, Fucking Young! to me is one of the best online (and print) magazines for contemporary/alternative mens fashion. They always provide inspiring editorial-based work that hurdles itself past the conservative boundaries of GQ and into a wild vat of experimental street style, culture, runway from around the world, and the best selection of hot homme boys. You might not like everything but at least you won't be bored.

BRUNCH CLUB - Alibi Room #5

The Alibi Room is kind of our new favourite place I guess. Quick service, AMAZING eggs bennies and never a line up, there's absolutely nothing to dislike and everything to love about it. This past Saturday was the busiest day we've gone and we still only had to wait 5 minutes - even still, it was a quick wait for the table of 4 to finish up and leave.

The three of us ended up at The Flying Pig Gastown for brunch this weekend and a delicious time was had. Saul ordered Chef Erik's Croque Madame with a side of Hashbrowns, for Kelsey it was the Country Style Breakfast, and for myself it was the Smoked Salmon Eggs Benny. Yum! When the Benny came it looked a lot smaller than a traditional Benny - two poached eggs on a single slice of sourdough with dill cream cheese and the smoked salmon. However to my delight it was extremely filling and the salad served with it was so refreshing with light vinaigrette it was served with. Also definitely recommend the side of hash browns. Saul usually likes his hash un-shreded but found the Flying Pig's shredded hash irresistible. Topped with fried onions and for an extra 4 bucks you won't be disappointed!

It was raining and there was nobody to take our photo so we went home and took our brunch club outfit photos in my new studio :)

OUTFIT/ Whose Rules

(click photo above to view in Lookbook)

Hat, Tank - H&M | Coat - Topshop | Sweatpants - Alexander Wang (Holt Renfrew)
Bag - Margiela x H&M | Sandals - Dr. Martens

Yesterday Saul and I attended Vancouver Fashion week to see our amazing friend, Evan Clayton, and the presentation of his AW14 collection Jenova. Those of you have been following SWAV for a couple weeks will have seen the Press Release images on the blog and the AW14 Look Book preview on FB. If you haven't you should check them out for sure. Hopefully the lookbook will be up soon.

I didn't take any photos of the collection live because we only wanted to see Evan's show and his collection being last, we didn't end up with seats that were good for photos. Also, I already have the lookbook photos so hah.

Anyways, onto the photos!

FEATURE/ How to Wear Topman Design

Amidst all the sportswear, neoprene, and street-inspiration on runways right now, we've seen an underlying menswear trend turning towards the wild west and the 70s for their inspiration. From the more obvious western inspiration with Versace and Louis Vuitton to the more subtle 70s story within  Acne Studios (note the neckerchiefs and boxier suiting) and Prada (on the 70s side with the prints and colours), Topman Design was right on the mark with this collection. The obvious was to do a heavily street-inspired collection like their SS13 collection but their design team wanted to shake things up and take it in the different direction.

Topman Design is always one of my favourite collections to keep an eye on every season because of their willingness to experiment with trends and how they provide exciting fashion pieces for people on a budget (like me) hahaha. Unfortunately in Vancouver between the flashy pieces, higher price point, and this city's fashion-apathy, Topman Design's collections are generally seen as unwearable and too over the top. Saul and I are here to prove otherwise, and that even though the runway looks may be an eyeful for some, there are definitely easy ways to work them into a wardrobe.

"Describing the process of the Topman Design team, creative director Gordon Richardson said it was all about the 180: going in the opposite direction of last time. So, if there were skate-y shorts and surf-y prints for Spring 2013, there'd be none of that this time around: no shorts, no prints, no hybrid tailoring For 2014, Topman decided to focus on the shirt, using embroidery for decoration. And, there being no embroidered shirt more iconic than a cowboy's, a story naturally evolved. But given Topman's natural inclination toward the poppier end of the fashion spectrum, this cowboy was of the urban variety, more glam rockabilly than noble frontiersman."

But anyways, enough talk, more pictures!

OUTFIT/ Dripping in Black

(Click photo above to view in Lookbook)

Hat - American Apparel | Cape - Complex Geometries | Long Fingerless Mitts - H&M
Crinkle Tshirt - Topman | Shorts - Vintage/Altered | Tights - Topshop
Shoes - New Balance (El Kartel) | Wallet - Comme Des Garcons

It's always hard coming up with titles for all-black outfits without totally sounding pretentious or cliché. I apologize if I offend anyone with how dumb they can be sometimes. Just know that I tried, and if I failed and you're all shaking your heads, please suggest some names for future black outfits - I'm gonna need them. On another note, I'm gonna start making more of these gif things when I have the time. Personally I find them somewhere between entertaining and creepy but as a plus, the outfits I make gifs with seem to get more traffic than the ones that don't so that's a bonus :)

It's been quite a whirlwind of a past couple weeks. New changes at work, photoshoots, rainy weather, and life in general this week have make it quite difficult to gather the energy to take the tripod out after a long day but I really enjoyed the layering in this outfit and felt like sharing it!

BRUNCH CLUB/ Alibi Room FT. Patrick Sherwood!

So we ended up at the Alibi Room yet again because Nuba, which we've been meaning to go to for two weeks now, doesn't open until 12 and Kelsey had to leave before 1. We also had a lot of wine the night before and couldn't be bothered to find a new place to go to, so Alibi Room it was. Ordered the Tomato and Brie Eggs Benny yet again and it was still just as delicious as the last one.

Yet again, I forgot to take the camera card out of the computer when I left the house. In advance I apologize for the quality, we had to use Saul's Samsung.

March 04, 2014

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of shooting with Vancouver's upcoming fashion talent, Evan Clayton. We shot the images for his media releases, and I'll be posting them here as he releases them to the public over the next couple weeks - enjoy!

Makeup: Kelseyanna Fitzpatrick
Hair: Jessica Langedyk
Model: Sierra Elizabeth
Photography/Editing: Marchel B. Eang

Some background information on his AW collection:
Evan Clayton is proud to present his Autumn / Winter 2014 collection, "JENOVA", at this seasons Vancouver Fashion Week showcase. The show will take place at The Chinese Cultural Center on March 20th, 2014 at 8:30 p.m.
Inspired by the artwork of Yoshitaka Amano and the central plot to the iconic videogame "Final Fantasy VII", JENOVA seeks to explore Western culture as seen through an Eastern lens. As well, an underlying theme of juxtaposition and unity in difference is seen. Human compassion is explored, with the morality of good and the totality of evil being questioned. Brushstrokes of feminity play sword to the rough edge of masculine will. Influenced by this theorem, JENOVA seeks to inspire an introspective quest in the viewer.

BRUNCH CLUB/ Alibi Room Round 3

We ended up at the Alibi Room again because Kelsey had to go to a makeup gig at 1 and we wanted to go to Nuba but they don't open until 12... so next week! Again I ordered the Tomato-Brie-Pesto Eggs Benny and I've come to the conclusion that you really can't go wrong with it. Serious recommendations on that one, it's really my new favourite brunch dish.
